The web is a great way to stay connected with people and to find exactly what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a 7 foot tall violinist from Southern North Dakota,
you can probably find him with a few key words in Google. However, there are also predators out there who capitalize on this same accessibility.
Whether you are using our network or any other on the web, remember to exercise caution when you first meet people. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind as you journey through the web:
1) The first time you meet someone, meet them in a public place. Have your first conversation over some french fries or a frozen yogurt.
2) Ask for references. Talk to other people who have used the provider that you are considering.
3) Check credentials. If someone presents you with licenses, accreditations, or certifications, call the appropriate agency to verify that they’re real, accurate, and up to date.
4) Hold on to your $$. Don’t pay for the entire amount of a project up front. Work out a payment system so that you pay for completed milestones.
5) Compare estimates. Make sure you’re getting the deal you want.
6) Get it in writing! Once you decide who you’re going to work with, put everything in writing to make sure that everyone is on the same page.
7) When in doubt, choose someone else! There are lots of people out there who can do what you’re looking for. If the first person doesn’t feel right to you (or the second or third), go with someone else. There are plenty of fish in the sea!
